Canada is the fifth-largest natural gas producer in the world. Scientific estimates suggest Canada's marketable natural gas resources could sustain current production levels for up to 300 years. The natural gas markets in Canada and the U.S. are highly integrated.
In 2015, Canada provided 97% of all U.S. natural gas imports, representing 10% of U.S. consumption. Canadian exports of natural gas go primarily to the U.S. Northeast, Midwest, Rocky Mountains, California and Pacific Northwest.
While the U.S. is expected to become a net exporter of natural gas around 2020, largely due to exploitation of the Bakken shale play, it is projected to be both an importer and exporter and will continue to rely on natural gas imports from Canada.
- Canada is the world's fourth-largest exporter of natural gas.
